Math Explorers
The MIST Academy Math Explorers program is aimed at gifted elementary school students in grades 3-5 who enjoy math, logic, games, and puzzles.
In
the Math Explorers program, students develop skills in enjoyable
ways that they might not otherwise develop until long after they are
already useful. Curriculum will aim students toward the fundamentals
of algebra, counting techniques, geometry, number theory, pattern
hunting, probability, statistics, and topology. What distinguishes our Math Explorers program from other programs is the problem solving focus.
The MIST Academy Math Explorers course is listed for grades 3 through 5, but MIST Academy actually places students in classes by ability, not age or grade. Problems and lessons in this class will include some from the Math Olympiads (MOEMS) program.

The Math Explorers class will run Saturday evenings from 7:00 to 8:45 PM. Class begins March 1 and will be held at the Vestavia Learning Center. A complete schedule can be found here. Math Explorers -- The 2008 MIST Academy Summer Institute has two Math Explorers sessions (the sessions are identical except for date) where rising 4th and 5th graders can explore the interesting twists and turns of mathematics not often explored in an ordinary classroom. Cost of enrollment in this concentrated two week course is $600.
The theme of the Fall Math Explorers class is Pieces and Parts. Mastering the art and science that is arithmetic means learning to handle fractions, work with remainders, and recognize the ways shapes and quantities fit together. The MIST Academy Math Explorers class includes lessons, games, and other activities to help 4th and 5th graders master these concepts.
The Fall Math Explorers class will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Class begins on August 20. A complete schedule can be found here.
